Bring the Ancestral Healing Work in Releasing What Isn't Yours Into Clinical Practice

There are gifts as well as burdens in every ancestry.

In her new book, Releasing What Isn’t Yours: Living From Your True Self Through Multidimensional Integrative Healing, Dr. Laurel Parnell examines how some of the pain, beliefs, and patterns people carry may be connected not only to their own experiences, but also to family history, inherited burdens, relational entanglements, and ancestral trauma.

The book introduces Multidimensional Integrative Healing (MDIH), Dr. Parnell’s approach to working across the psychological, relational, ancestral, spiritual, and energetic dimensions of healing.

In this live virtual workshop, Dr. Parnell will bring the ancestral dimension of MDIH into a practical clinical learning experience for therapists.

Attachment-Focused Ancestral Resourcing integrates the broader MDIH framework with principles from Attachment-Focused EMDR, including safety, attunement, client-centered pacing, cultural humility, guided imagery, and bilateral stimulation.

You’ll learn how to help clients recognize not only what may have been passed forward through trauma, but also the wisdom, protection, resilience, nourishment, and belonging that may be available within their lineage.

What Is Attachment-Focused Ancestral Resourcing?

Attachment-Focused Ancestral Resourcing uses guided imagery and bilateral stimulation to help clients connect with supportive resources from their ancestral line.

This work brings the ancestral dimension of Multidimensional Integrative Healing into a careful, collaborative clinical approach grounded in safety, attunement, cultural humility, and respect for the client’s own experience.

These resources may include:

  • known or unknown ancestors

  • wise ancestors

  • ancestral helping spirits

  • cultural or spiritual traditions

  • ancestral land

  • healthy and resilient aspects of the lineage

  • the ancestral well or spring

You may use these resources alongside foundational AF-EMDR resources such as Nurturing Figures, Protector Figures, and Wise Figures.

What You'll Learn

During this three-hour workshop, Dr. Parnell will show you how to:

Recognize when ancestral resourcing may be clinically appropriate

Identify and develop ancestral resources

Use guided imagery and bilateral stimulation to strengthen those resources

Support stabilization, affect regulation, resilience, and belonging

Work with inherited beliefs and repeating lineage patterns

Bring reparative resources to parts of the lineage affected by trauma, deprivation, or unmet developmental needs

Distinguish between the client's own developmental wounds and ancestral developmental repair

Keep the work trauma-informed, respectful, and culturally responsive

You'll also explore questions such as:

  • What did this family member or ancestor need?

  • What might have helped them?

  • Who or what could offer safety, nourishment, protection, comfort, or love?

  • What strengths are already present within the lineage?

How This Might Look in Practice

As Dr. Parnell describes in Releasing What Isn’t Yours, healing may involve recognizing what belongs to the client’s own story, what may be connected to relationships or earlier generations, and what resources may support greater freedom and wholeness.

A client may carry a persistent belief that “there is never enough,” even when their current circumstances are stable. Through ancestral resourcing, you might explore whether the client connects that belief with a family history of scarcity, famine, displacement, or deprivation, then help them imagine bringing nourishment, safety, or abundance to the lineage.

Another client may carry the belief that they must remain tough or emotionally guarded to be valued. You’ll explore how a survival strategy that may once have protected earlier generations can become limiting when carried forward.

Attachment-Focused Ancestral Resourcing offers a way to work with these patterns without imposing an interpretation, assuming every struggle began in the ancestral line, or treating symbolic material as literal fact.

What to Expect

This workshop combines clinical teaching with practical application.

Dr. Parnell will use:

  • case examples

  • guided reflection

  • experiential exercises

  • demonstrations

  • clinical discussion

  • examples of bilateral stimulation and ancestral resource development

You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of how to introduce ancestral resourcing, when it may be helpful, and how to integrate it into your work without imposing meaning or treating symbolic material as literal fact.

You’ll also gain a clearer understanding of how ancestral resourcing fits within Multidimensional Integrative Healing and the broader body of work presented in Releasing What Isn’t Yours.

Who This Workshop Is For

This workshop is designed for mental health professionals who want practical, trauma-informed ways to work with intergenerational trauma, inherited beliefs, cultural disconnection, and lineage-based resources.

It may be especially meaningful for clinicians interested in the intersection of psychological, relational, ancestral, spiritual, and energetic dimensions of healing within the MDIH framework.
